Project Description

YMCA Malta is a non-profit voluntary organisation seeking to promote the vision to build a more just society. Its mission includes working among and empowering young people and providing services to the most needy members of the community. YMCA’s objectives and goals are to perform mainly as a Social Work services agency, a Youth Work agency and a Housing Association.

The EU estimates 5.8 million tons of textiles are discarded annually with only a quarter recycled. This translates into 60 garbage truckloads of clothes on landfill sites every minute and 1.2 billion tons of greenhouse gases annually.

Everyday, YMCA rejects an estimated 5 large garbage bags of clothes, this mainly due to unavailable logistics at their disposal. This and many other items rejected are an extension of resources that could be used in expanding the service that they provide. Further, the environmental impact of textile is on the rise and worsening due to the introduction of fast fashion. In recent times, clothes are worn an average of 8 times leading to many inactive clothes.

Textile pollution gets little mention, unlike plastics and other pollutants, with textile recycling having become even more challenging with the introduction of fast fashion. As an island, Malta’s environmental impact is of particular concern and this is why YMCA Malta wants to create an online shop, ANTIK, in order to recirculate inactive clothes, furniture and other items. This enterprise would allow people to market their inactive clothes and other items to the populations living in Malta and would also be of benefit to the marginalised, economically challenged or impoverished people. ANTIK seeks to generate additional income for its mother organisation YMCA Malta to enhance the services provided to the homeless population and youth in Malta.

THE IMPACT

  • Reducing the environmental impact of textiles on the environment
  • Providing clothing at the most affordable or free for a struggling population
  • Generate additional revenue for YMCA Malta
  • Create intermediary jobs for the homeless and putting them on a path of independence
  • Springboard to more opportunities in the general market

The overall budget of this initiative is around €62,000. Any little bit helps them get closer to their target. Donate and be a changemaker too! For more information on their initiative, check out their Pitch Deck.
