Help us protect Malta's National Species, the Maltese Honey Bee (Apis mellifera ruttneri), from extinction. After years of research and advocacy, our Foundation successfully achieved national recognition for this unique bee. Now, we aim to purchase and safeguard colonies of this precious species. Your support is vital to ensure their survival. Join us in preserving this national treasure – together, we can make a difference!

Project Description

After several years of hard work, including extensive research into the legal protections surrounding the Maltese Honey Bee (Apis mellifera ruttneri), the Foundation for the Conservation of the Maltese Honey Bee has successfully petitioned the Environment and Resources Authority to elevate the status of this endemic subspecies to a National Insect of Malta. The Foundation has worked tirelessly to campaign for this initiative, and we are proud to have also persuaded the Central Bank of Malta to issue a €2 commemorative coin in honour of this unique ectotype.

We are thrilled to announce that, just a few days ago, Malta officially declared the Maltese Honey Bee as our National Species. Now, our Foundation aims to take the next crucial step in our efforts: purchasing colonies of this precious species, to be owned and safeguarded directly by our organisation. These colonies will help protect the honey bee, which faces the risk of extinction.

If you would like to support us in reaching this goal, we would greatly appreciate your donation. Together, we can make a difference!

If you have donated and wish to receive the reward associated with your donation, kindly email us at [email protected] with your details.

The Foundation for the Conservation of the Maltese Honey Bee is officially registered with the Office of the Commissioner for Voluntary Organisations (VO/2403).
