Project Description
Project Overview
Move For Meals is a community-led initiative developed in response to the cost-of-living crisis, which has left a significant portion of the local population—20.1%—at risk of poverty or social exclusion. The project seeks to provide essential meals to those in need by supporting local organisations, specifically Dar Hosea, Soup Kitchen and The New Beginnings Foundation.
Project Objectives
The project is guided by three main objectives:
- Provide Meals: Secure funds to cover the cost of meals for homeless individuals and those facing hardship.
- Raise Awareness: Increase public understanding of the hunger crisis and its broader impact on the community.
- Reduce Long-Term Need: Encourage healthier lifestyles through physical exercise, which can help lessen the dependency on emergency food support.
Community Engagement Through Movement
A distinctive aspect of Move For Meals is its incorporation of physical exercise into the fundraising effort. Movement is used not only to promote better physical and mental well-being but also to bring the community together. This approach aims to support participants in overcoming challenges associated with situational hardship while offering both immediate relief and long-term benefits.
Event Details
The crowdfunded project centres on a day-long event scheduled for 1st May 2025 from 6 a.m. to 1 p. m. at St. Paul’s Missionary College in Rabat. The event will offer a range of physical activities and community engagement opportunities designed to foster a sense of togetherness and purpose, all contributing to the overall fundraising effort. Detailed timings of individual activities are available in the supplementary schedule.
The Team
The project is supported by a diverse team:
- Aaron Buhagiar: Co-founder of Garnish, with extensive experience in food logistics and delivery.
- Steve Sammut Nurminen: An endurance athlete and personal trainer who brings valuable insight into mental health and overcoming physical challenges.
- Gareth Sciberras: A former professional footballer and partner at BRND WGN, contributing strategic creative expertise and a strong advocacy for active living.
- Fabienne Buhagiar: Provides essential administrative support, overseeing the hosting and coordination of the event with various stakeholders.
Track Record and Impact
Past events have demonstrated the initiative’s growing impact:
2021: 75 meals provided.
2022: 770 meals provided.
2023: 2040 meals provided.
These figures reflect a strong and expanding commitment within the community, laying a solid foundation for the upcoming event.
Move For Meals is not merely a fundraising drive—it is a community endeavour that addresses both immediate and long-term challenges. By combining the provision of essential meals with initiatives that promote physical exercise and mental well-being, the project aims to make a lasting contribution towards reducing the need for emergency food support. The crowdfunding initiative invites community members and supporters to contribute to a cause that feeds the body and nurtures a healthier, more resilient community.
