The University races date back to as early as the 80s when University students would gather on the ring road for a showdown of the fittest. People always looked forward to the event. There must be something special about running around the University Ring Road!

Fast-forward 30 years or so and we can proudly say the races have come a long way. Malta University Holding Company Ltd (MUHC) has been organising this event since 2013 with 13th March 2016 marking the 5th edition. This year – with the BRND WGN crew on board, more prizes, non-stop entertainment and vamped-up goody bags – it’s going to be BIGGER THAN EVER.

Over the years, one of the main scopes of these races has been to help raise money for Hospice Malta, a voluntary, ‘not-for-profit’ organization today caring for over 1000 patients and their families. Hospice services are offered free of charge to patients suffering from cancer, motor neuron disease and end life respiratory, cardiac and renal disease. Hospice Malta relies on the generosity of the Maltese public to ensure the continuation of their services in Malta and Gozo. In fact half the proceeds from the races are always donated to this cause.

But this year, we promised things were going to be Bigger and Better and this is where we had our ‘eureka’ moment: “Murphy Runs for Hospice Malta”. What better way to make an event a success than by targeting the philosophy behind the actual races – i.e. running for a cause. You’re probably lost at this point, and we don’t blame you, we’re getting ahead of ourselves a bit. SO WHAT DOES THIS ALL MEAN? AND WHO IS THIS MYSTERIOUS INDIVIDUAL IN A PINK MORPH SUIT?

Having BRND WGN on board for this edition meant we were able to make use of their Wagoneer in chief, Murphy, literally a man in a pink morph suit who represents their company. He is the ideal individual, who can solve any issue – a Mr. Fixit you could say and one who is always up for the next challenge.

MUHC has set Murphy his next and probably most intense challenge yet; that of running in order to help raise more funds for Hospice. Murphy is already in strict training hoping to conquer his first challenge at the Vodafone Malta Half Marathon on the 28th February, before moving on to the BRND WGN & University Ring Road Races set for the 13th March.

But Murphy cannot do this alone, he needs the help of the general public and their donations in order to truly make this project a success. With a hefty €1000 to raise, Murphy is doing his part and training on a daily basis. Now it’s up to you to help us reach our target and contribute towards the continuation of Hospice Malta services which help families cope with the difficult and distressing issues that arise in the face of serious illness.
