Project Description
Since 1996, we have been operating our YMCA Homeless Project, particularly, a residential shelter for 30 homeless individuals, families and children. Our services have rendered a total bed night provision of over 97,104 until end of 2018 to children, adolescents, and adults experiencing homelessness. We calculate that we give service to an average of 80 clients per year with an average of over 8,000 bed nights per year. Homelessness in Malta, is a hidden social problem and it is ever increasing; whilst in 2016 we received 355 cases, in 2017 we received almost 400 cases in which, over 80 cases where children.
This project is to help us invest in buying and installing Solar Panels at the shelter. With such huge accommodation premises, the present annual energy consumption at our shelter is 16200 units costing €4,400. With the proposed installation to fit the existing roof, the annual generated energy is expected to yield 6864 units into the grid, equivalent to a saving of €1,864 from the annual energy bill or a reduction of 42% in cost.
Join us in this challenge and help us continue providing a service for vulnerable and homeless individuals, families and children.
Why are we raising funds?
We plan to have solar panels and solar heaters installed on the roof and terrace of our Dar Niki Cassar’ Residential Facility & Emergency Shelter.
The objectives are twofold;-
- To reduce our current utility bill expense by 42%.
We offer shelter & emergency admission to homeless persons – males, females, families, and children. Our doors are open to one and all, irrespective of colour or creed. We provide a 24-hour service, care workers and social workers. We strive to offer the best amenities possible – a fully-fledged staff room, washrooms, bathrooms, a shared roof and garden where our residents can meet and integrate during their free time
- To be part of the ever-growing eco-friendly family by resorting to alternative modes of energy supply
We are committed to make a difference and improve lives, however, we cannot do it alone. We need your help!
What happens with funds collected over and above the required sum?
If funds collected exceeds the sum required of €8,000.00 YMCA will be utilizing the funds in the required maintenance at the same premises. YMCA’s shelter occupies 30 residents a day and maintenance is required all year round because of wear and tear.
Alex Cutajar from Summer Nights donated food in order to support our residential facility ‘Dar Niki Cassar’ and our homeless residents:
We thank you in advance for supporting us to raise these funds for this project!

Project FAQ
YMCA ART LOVERS – WORKS BY PAUL VELLA CRITIEN in Collaboration with this Project.
Paul Vella Critien (b. 1960), the son of Aldo and Marita, had his grandfather, the well-known artist Gianni Vella as his mentor and tutor (1973-1977). While still in his early teens, Paul enhanced his love towards sketching, painting and modeling under the guidance of Censu Apap and Esprit Barthet at the Malta School of Art. In the same institute, Paul studied ceramics under Gianni Bonnici, and Gabriel Caruana, forming part of the third generation of ceramics during the 20th century.
An explosive force of dynamic energy and a burst of vivid extravagant colours, powerful and suggestive shapes and forms, with a defined outline are Paul’s expression. Paul’s work emanates joy and pleasure and although there is a hint of tension in his work, these dynamics are well balanced with and explosive force which is contained in unity. Paul’s works emanates joy an pleasure. He loves life and his explicit hedonism emphasizes his vision of a world of overwhelming beauty. Although there is a hint of tension in his work, his dynamics are well balanced and the explosive force is contained in unity
After achieving his Diploma from the Malta School of Art, Paul was recommended by the to the Italian Government by the Education Department and was awarded a five-year scholarship at the ‘Gaetano Ballardini, Istituto Statale d’Arte per la Ceramica’ in Faenza and ‘Accademia di Belle Arti’ in Ravenna (1978-1982). He specialized in Fine Arts and Ceramics obtained a B.A. in Ceramics and an M.A. in Fine Art.
