Project Description

Since 1996, we have been operating our YMCA Homeless Project, particularly, a residential shelter for 30 homeless individuals, families and children. Our services have rendered a total bed night provision of over 97,104 until end of 2018 to children, adolescents, and adults experiencing homelessness.  We calculate that we give service to an average of 80 clients per year with an average of over 8,000 bed nights per year.   Homelessness in Malta, is a hidden social problem and it is ever increasing; whilst in 2016 we received 355 cases, in 2017 we received almost 400 cases in which, over 80 cases where children.

This project is to help us invest in buying and installing Solar Panels at the shelter.    With such huge accommodation premises, the present annual energy consumption at our shelter is 16200 units costing €4,400.  With the proposed installation to fit the existing roof, the annual generated energy is expected to yield 6864 units into the grid, equivalent to a saving of €1,864 from the annual energy bill or a reduction of 42% in cost.

Join us in this challenge and help us continue providing a service for vulnerable and homeless individuals, families and children.

Why are we raising funds?

We plan to have solar panels and solar heaters installed on the roof and terrace of our Dar Niki Cassar’ Residential Facility & Emergency Shelter.

The objectives are twofold;-

  • To reduce our current utility bill expense by 42%.

We offer shelter & emergency admission to homeless persons – males, females, families, and children. Our doors are open to one and all, irrespective of colour or creed. We provide a 24-hour service, care workers and social workers. We strive to offer the best amenities possible – a fully-fledged staff room, washrooms, bathrooms, a shared roof and garden where our residents can meet and integrate during their free time

  • To be part of the ever-growing eco-friendly family by resorting to alternative modes of energy supply

We are committed to make a difference and improve lives, however, we cannot do it alone. We need your help!

What happens with funds collected over and above the required sum?

If funds collected exceeds the sum required of €8,000.00 YMCA will be utilizing the funds in the required maintenance at the same premises.  YMCA’s shelter occupies 30 residents a day and maintenance is required all year round because of wear and tear.
